Larry David Defends Cutting Ties With Trump Lawyer: ‘Deal With The Devil’
Larry David’s longtime friendship with Alan Dershowitz ended a while ago, and to this day, he still believes it was the right decision to cut him off.
The duo shared a close friendship that ended after Dershowitz joined President Donald Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment trial in 2020.
Reflecting on the end of their friendship, David said he believes Dershowitz “made a deal with the devil” by representing the real estate mogul at the time.
Since Alan Dershowitz joined Donald Trump’s defense team during the president’s first impeachment trial in 2020, the lawyer has faced some ostracism from the community he was associated with.
Larry David, who was friends with Dershowitz at the time, also joined in the ostracism. The pair famously confronted each other on Martha’s Vineyard in 2021, when David called his former friend “disgusting.”
Now, as part of a profile on Dershowitz, David has revealed that he has no regrets about ending their long-running friendship.
“I’m loath to say anything mean because he’s been so ostracized,” he told The Atlantic’s Mark Leibovich. “But he only has himself to blame. He made a deal with the devil. Literally. And I’d bet the devil hasn’t said a word to him since the impeachment.”
4Amid David and Dershowitz’s long-running feud, Dershowitz’s son, Elon, died after suffering a stroke.
Speaking about his son’s death, Dershowitz shared in the profile that David never acknowledged it in any way. He also expressed surprise that his former friend would turn against his son as well when others did not.
David confirmed Dershowitz’s account, adding that he regrets not reaching out to offer his condolences at the time.
“He’s 100 percent right,” David told the outlet about Dershowitz’s claims. “I should have reached out, and I certainly regret not doing so.
“As I said on Curb once, ‘I think of nice things. I just don’t act on them,’” he added, referencing his comedy show Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Larry David Is Baffled Alan Dershowitz Still Talks About Him
4Even though years have passed since their friendship ended, Dershowitz still seems to remember David fondly. He said they would often have dinner, share jokes, and spend time together before their falling-out.
“I allowed him to use my gym to work out,” Dershowitz further recalled. “I helped him on a number of occasions.”
However, unlike Dershowitz, David finds it bizarre that his former friend still has him in mind, despite his having made it clear he is not interested in rekindling their friendship.
“I don’t know why he’s still thinking and talking about me,” the comedian said in a response via email.
Alan Dershowitz Faces Fresh Questions Over Jeffrey Epstein Defense
4Beyond the fallout from representing Trump, Dershowitz has also continued to face criticism over his past representation of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2008.
More recently, he was confronted by an individual outside a store near his home, who repeatedly questioned him about whether he defends pedophiles.
When Dershowitz asked the individual to identify himself, the person refused and continued to taunt him.
“My name is Jeffrey Epstein Jr., great friend to Alan Dershowitz,” Dershowitz claimed the man replied.
“He was on the [Epstein’s] plane, and he kept his underwear on,” Dershowitz recalled the man saying, prompting the lawyer to call him a “schmuck” in retaliation.
Dershowitz Wishes He Never Met Jeffrey Epstein
4Reflecting further on the Epstein matter, Dershowitz admitted that he had flown on Epstein’s plane several times and had received a shoulder and neck massage from an adult woman at Epstein’s home in Palm Beach. However, he denied ever receiving an erotic massage, particularly from any minor whom Epstein was alleged to have trafficked.
As for representing the late sex offender, Dershowitz believes everyone is entitled to legal representation, but he does wish he had never had the chance to meet Epstein.
“I wish I never met him,” Dershowitz told his interviewer, adding, “But I don’t regret my representation of him.”
