LASU Graduates 20,604 Students, Honours Dangote, Adesola, Kekere-Ekun At 29th/30th Combined Convocation
Lagos State University (LASU) is set to graduate 20,604 students during its 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremonies, while Aliko Dangote, Bola Adesola and Akin Kekere-Ekun will receive honorary doctorate degrees.
This was made known on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, during a press conference held at the university’s main campus in Ojo to formally unveil the programme of activities for the combined convocation.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello described the ceremony as a historic milestone for the institution, noting that it celebrates the achievements of two academic sessions and reflects LASU’s commitment to academic stability, institutional resilience and continuous advancement.
She also disclosed that the 2026 convocation would be her final convocation ceremony as the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, making the occasion particularly significant for her administration.
“This year’s convocation marks a historic milestone for our university as we celebrate the combined achievements of the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions. It is a testament to our unwavering commitment to academic stability, institutional resilience and continuous advancement,” she said.
Providing a breakdown of the graduating students, the Vice-Chancellor stated that 947 diploma students graduated in the 2024/2025 session, including 65 distinctions, 521 upper credits, 354 lower credits and seven passes.
For the 2024/2025 first-degree programmes, 7,621 students graduated, comprising: 262 First Class; 3,155 Second Class Upper; 3,439 Second Class Lower; 622 Third Class; 37 Pass; and 106 Unclassified MBBS/BDS degrees.
The overall best graduating student for the session is Ayilara Lawal Olawale of the Department of Project Management, who graduated with a CGPA of 4.96. For the 2025/2026 academic session, the university recorded 44 diploma graduates, consisting of 33 upper credits and 11 lower credits.
The 8,653 first-degree graduates for the session include: 232 First Class; 3,545 Second Class Upper; 4,157 Second Class Lower; 678 Third Class; and 31 Pass. The overall best graduating student is Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, who achieved a CGPA of 4.97.
The Vice-Chancellor also announced that 3,383 postgraduate students will graduate across the two sessions, including: 618 Postgraduate Diplomas; 1,508 Academic Master’s degrees; 900 Professional Master’s degrees; 238 PhD degrees, and 119 Professional Doctoral degrees.
In total, LASU will produce 20,604 graduates, made up of 991 diploma holders, 16,274 first-degree graduates and 3,383 postgraduate graduates.
According to the VC, the Senate of the university has approved the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees (Honoris Causa) on three distinguished Nigerians: Mr Akin Kekere-Ekun, OFR – Doctor of Business Honoris Causa (Entrepreneurship, Finance and Management); Mrs Harriet-Ann Omobola (Bola) Adesola – Doctor of Business Honoris Causa (Corporate Finance and Governance); and Alhaji Aliko Dangote, GCON – Doctor of Business Honoris Causa (Entrepreneurship, Industrial and Human Capital Development).
The university will also confer the prestigious rank of Distinguished Professor on Prof. Rafiu Olaoluwa Okuneye and Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello in recognition of their outstanding contributions to teaching, research, mentorship and the advancement of knowledge.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted that the Convocation Lecture will be delivered on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, titled: “From LASU to the World: Harnessing the Nigerian Diaspora as the 7th Region for National Development.” The event will be chaired by Honourable Tasir Wale Raji, representing Epe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
She said the convocation activities will commence with pre-convocation events, including a staff sports competition and the first-ever Staff Celebration Day, during which staff members will appear in traditional attire representing Nigeria’s cultural diversity.
Other major activities include: Coconut Breaking and Cultural Day – August 14; Convocation Jumat Service – August 14; Conferment of Diplomas, First Degrees, PGDs and Master’s Degrees in Engineering and Agricultural Sciences – August 17 at the Epe Campus. Conferment of degrees for remaining faculties – August 18 at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo; Professional and Academic Doctorate Awards – August 19. Special Convocation Thanksgiving Service – August 23 at the Chapel of Light, Ojo Campus
Highlighting the university’s recent achievements, Prof. Olatunji-Bello revealed that LASU attracted over 84,000 first-choice applications in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), making it Nigeria’s most subscribed university for the second consecutive year.
She said the feat earned the institution recognition at the 2026 National Tertiary Admissions Performance Merit Award as the most preferred institution among admission seekers.
The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that LASU retained its position as the Best University in West Africa in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for the fourth consecutive year, while also maintaining its status as Nigeria’s leading state university.
According to her, the university also strengthened its intellectual culture by delivering 20 inaugural lectures across various disciplines within the last year and continued to host high-profile scholarly engagements, including the 2026 Distinguished Personality Lecture delivered by the Oniru of Iru Kingdom, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal.
