Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, will confer certificates and higher degrees on 20,604 graduands during its 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremonies, with a view to bringing together recipients from the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, disclosed the figure on Wednesday at a press briefing ahead of the week-long ceremony, which will feature the conferment of diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, alongside honorary doctorates and the elevation of two academics to Distinguished Professors.
The combined ceremony, she explained, was scheduled to clear the backlog created by adjustments to the university’s academic calendar.
For the 2024/2025 session, LASU recorded 947 diploma graduates and 7,621 first-degree graduates.
Among the diploma recipients, 65 earned Distinction, 521 obtained Upper Credit, 354 recorded Lower Credit and seven finished with Pass.
The first-degree category produced 262 First Class graduates, 3,155 Second Class Upper, 3,439 Second Class Lower, 622 Third Class and 37 Pass graduates.
Ayilara Lawal Olawale of the Department of Project Management emerged as the overall best graduating student for the session, finishing with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.96.

For the 2025/2026 session, the university listed 44 diploma graduates, comprising 33 Upper Credit and 11 Lower Credit recipients.
Another 8,653 students completed first-degree programmes during the session. Of this number, 232 secured First Class, 3,545 made Second Class Upper, 4,157 obtained Second Class Lower, 678 finished with Third Class and 31 graduated with Pass.
Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide of the Department of Aerospace Engineering was named the session’s overall best graduating student, having recorded a CGPA of 4.97.
The university will also confer higher degrees on 3,383 postgraduate recipients from the two academic sessions. They comprise 618 postgraduate diploma holders, 1,508 academic Master’s graduates, 900 professional Master’s graduates, 238 Doctor of Philosophy graduates and 119 professional doctoral recipients.
LASU is also set to honour three prominent Nigerians with honorary doctorate degrees.
Akin Kekere-Ekun will receive a Doctor of Business, Honoris Causa, for his contributions to entrepreneurship, finance, and management. Dr Harriet-Ann Omobola Adesola will be honoured for her contributions to corporate finance and governance, while Alhaji Aliko Dangote will receive recognition for his contributions to entrepreneurship, industrial development, and human capital development.
Two LASU professors, Rafiu Olaoluwa Okuneye and Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, will equally be elevated to the rank of Distinguished Professors for their contributions to teaching, research, mentorship, and the advancement of knowledge.
The programme began on Thursday with a staff sports competition and the first Staff Celebration Day. Friday’s activities will include coconut breaking, a cultural day and the convocation Juma’at service.
The conferment of diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and Master’s degrees in Engineering and Agricultural Sciences will take place at the university’s Epe Campus on Monday, August 17.
On Tuesday, August 18, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, will deliver the convocation lecture titled, “From LASU to the World: Harnessing the Nigerian Diaspora as the Seventh Region for National Development.”
The university will conclude the ceremonies on Wednesday, August 19, with the conferment of Professional and Academic Doctorate degrees, as well as the honorary doctorate awards.
