List of Universities approved to offer law degrees in Nigeria

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released an updated list of 122 universities approved to admit law students in Nigeria, warning prospective students and parents to check a university’s status before accepting admission. Students who enrol for an LL.B degree at an institution without CLE approval risk being denied entry into the Nigerian Law School after graduation.
The list, current as of August 2026, covers federal, state and private universities across Nigeria. It comes as thousands of candidates prepare for university admissions and make decisions about courses and institutions.
In a public notice dated 14 August 2026, the Council said only institutions accredited by it were authorised to admit students into Bachelor of Laws, or LL.B, programmes.
The LL.B is the university law degree normally completed before a graduate proceeds to the Nigerian Law School for professional training.
The Council warned that students admitted to law programmes without its approval would not be eligible for admission to the Law School. Universities that ignore the requirement could also face sanctions. The notice was signed by Aderonke O. Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration.
Three universities face admission restrictions
Prospective students should not assume that every institution appearing on the 122-university list can currently admit new law students without restriction.
Three institutions are listed with moratoriums on admission, meaning the Council has temporarily stopped them from admitting new students into their LL.B programmes for specified academic sessions.
Baze University in Abuja has a three-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2025/2026 academic sessions.
Lead City University in Ibadan faces a five-year restriction from the 2023/2024 session through 2027/2028.
The Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, is also listed with a two-year moratorium covering the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 sessions.
Candidates considering any of the three institutions should therefore check the applicable academic session and obtain current confirmation before accepting a law admission.
The warning is particularly important because securing a place through JAMB or meeting a university’s UTME requirements does not by itself establish that a law programme has professional approval from the Council of Legal Education.

What prospective students should do
Parents and candidates should verify a university’s CLE status before paying acceptance fees or beginning an LL.B programme.
They should also distinguish between general university approval and professional accreditation for Law. Nigeria’s higher education system has different regulatory bodies, and professional courses can require additional approval from the relevant professional regulator.
The Council said the 122-institution list would continue to be updated when necessary as part of its responsibility for regulating legal education.
For students already navigating the admission process, New Daily Prime has also published a guide explaining how UTME candidates can check admission lists.
