Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has addressed the speculation surrounding his early exit from TikTok stars Peller and Jarvis’ traditional wedding ceremony.
The social media couple got married over the weekend, with Seun Kuti among the notable guests who attended the celebration.
However, a video showing the singer leaving the venue before the event ended quickly made the rounds online. Some reports claimed Seun was upset after an MC allegedly suggested that Wizkid was bigger than his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
In the viral footage, Seun was heard saying that he was “in the wrong place,” further fueling speculation about what may have happened at the ceremony.
Speaking during a recent interaction with Fuji musician Malaika, Seun clarified that his departure had nothing to do with anger over any comment made at the wedding.
According to the singer, he left the ceremony because he wanted to head to the New Afrika Shrine, the iconic Lagos venue closely associated with his father’s legacy.
Seun accused bloggers of misrepresenting the situation and turning his decision to leave into a controversy.
“I left the wedding to go to the Shrine, and these bloggers twisted things, saying I was angry. Maybe I should have danced out of the ceremony,” he said.
The incident came amid the lingering tension between Seun and sections of Wizkid’s fanbase over comparisons between the Grammy-winning singer and Fela Kuti.
Seun had previously criticised Wizkid FC for repeatedly bringing up Fela’s name during debates about contemporary Nigerian musicians. He argued that describing modern-day artistes as the “new Fela” showed a limited understanding of the late legend’s influence and ideals.
The situation became more heated after Wizkid declared that he was bigger than Fela Kuti and questioned Seun’s authority to speak on behalf of his late father.
Meanwhile, Davido has also shown support for the Kuti family. The singer attended a tribute event celebrating Fela Kuti in Los Angeles during Grammy weekend, where he joined members of the Kuti family, including Femi and Yeni Kuti, to honour the enduring legacy of the Afrobeat pioneer.
