Abdul El-Sayed held a narrow lead in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary early Wednesday as voters across Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Virginia and Washington chose nominees for key races ahead of November’s midterm elections.
With 91 percent of ballots counted, El-Sayed was leading US Representative Haley Stevens, though The Associated Press had not yet called the race.
The winner will face Republican Mike Rogers in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who is not seeking re-election.
Stevens was backed by establishment Democrats, including Peters, while El-Sayed secured endorsements from progressive figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib.
US support for Israel and its war on Gaza emerged as a major issue in the Michigan primary.

In Kansas, Republican Senator Roger Marshall comfortably won renomination and will face Democrat Adam Hamilton in November.
