Two police inspectors were killed after a Toyota Hilux reportedly driven by a military officer struck them while they were on traffic duty at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Junction in Kaduna, the Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed.
The deceased officers, identified as Inspector Tanko Musa and Inspector Ajubi Onah of the Kawo Police Division, were managing traffic at the busy intersection when the crash occurred on Thursday.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle veered off the road before hitting the officers. Videos circulating on social media showed the aftermath of the incident before emergency responders arrived.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kaduna State, DSP Mansir Hassan, described it as a tragic road traffic accident.
“The police officers were on their lawful duty when the incident occurred,” Hassan said.He added that the military officer involved in the crash also sustained injuries and is receiving treatment in hospital. Responding to claims by some eyewitnesses that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol, Hassan said the police could not verify the allegation.
“I cannot speak on whether the officer was drunk or not. What I can confirm is that it was a case of accident,” he said.The police said they are working with the military to investigate the incident and determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. The command also extended its condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased officers.
