NCAA moves to track passengers’ bags from check-in to destination with RFID
Nigeria’s aviation regulator is moving to overhaul the country’s baggage-handling system with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, a measure aimed at reducing cases of missing, misrouted, and short-landed luggage at airports.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, said the proposed RFID system would give passengers and airlines better visibility of checked baggage throughout its journey, from the point of check-in until arrival at the passenger’s destination.
The initiative is expected to address one of the recurring difficulties faced by air travellers: uncertainty over the whereabouts of their luggage when bags fail to arrive with their owners.
Under the proposed system, passengers would be able to monitor the movement of their checked bags in real time, while airlines would have improved means of tracing luggage that is missing or sent to the wrong destination.

The NCAA said consultations had already taken place with domestic airlines, aviation service providers, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, as part of efforts to finalise arrangements for the transition from conventional barcode-based baggage tagging to RFID technology.
The regulator indicated that the change would improve the visibility of luggage as it passes through different stages of the airport process. It would also strengthen the ability of airlines to trace bags and respond to complaints when baggage-handling problems arise.
The proposed transition is part of the efforts to expand the use of technology in Nigeria’s aviation industry and improve the efficiency of airport services.
The NCAA said the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, had approved plans for relevant aviation agencies to study the RFID technology and submit their findings before implementation.
The approval means the proposed baggage-tracking system is still at the examination and planning stage, while the concerned agencies are expected to assess the technology before it is introduced across Nigerian airports.
For passengers, the significance of the proposed system lies in the greater visibility it could provide during a journey. Instead of relying solely on conventional baggage tags and waiting to discover whether a bag has arrived, travellers could have a clearer indication of where their luggage is within the airport handling process.
The system could equally make it easier for airlines to establish what happened to a bag when it fails to reach its intended destination, potentially improving the process of resolving baggage-related complaints.
The NCAA’s plan therefore places baggage tracking at the centre of efforts to make air travel more accountable and technology-driven.
If implemented after the ongoing assessment, the RFID system would represent a major change in how checked luggage is identified and monitored across Nigeria’s airports, particularly in dealing with cases involving missing, misrouted, and short-landed bags.
