The Osun State Government has begun another round of palliative payments to civil servants, saying the measure is part of its continuing effort to cushion the impact of economic hardship on workers while sustaining improvements in public sector welfare.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, who said the disbursement is a testament to the administration’s commitment to supporting public servants amid rising living costs.
According to the statement, the payments are intended to complement workers’ salaries and form part of a welfare package introduced by the state government since the current administration assumed office.

Rasheed said the state began paying periodic palliatives before implementing the new national minimum wage, a move he described as placing Osun among the first states to adopt the revised salary structure.
The spokesperson said, “As part of our commitment to civil servants of Osun State, the backbone of our administration, we have once again disbursed palliatives to augment their salaries.”
He added that the state had maintained the support programme even after introducing the new wage, presenting it as part of a strategy to protect workers from the effects of prevailing economic conditions.
The fresh payments came at a time when many state governments are adjusting to the financial demands of the new minimum wage while also responding to rising inflation, higher transportation costs, and increased prices of food and other basic commodities.
Across the country, several state administrations have introduced temporary relief measures ranging from transport subsidies to food support and cash payments in an effort to ease pressure on workers and low-income households.
In Osun, the government said the intervention is aimed at maintaining the morale of the public workforce and strengthening the capacity of the civil service to deliver essential government services.
Rasheed maintained that the administration sees workers’ welfare as central to improving governance, and that better remuneration and regular support would help attract and retain qualified personnel in the state public service.
The statement also drew a comparison with the previous administration, with a claim that civil servants were denied salaries and other entitlements during that period. However, no response from officials who served in the former government was included in the statement.
The Adeleke administration has consistently placed workers’ welfare among its policy priorities, alongside infrastructure development, education, and healthcare. Since assuming office, the government has always pledged to improve conditions for civil servants and pensioners through salary payments, wage adjustments, and other support measures.
While the latest palliative payments may provide temporary relief for many workers, labour it doesn’t scrab the fact that long-term improvements in workers’ welfare depend on stable wages, prudent fiscal management, and sustained economic growth rather than periodic interventions alone.
For now, the Osun State Government says the additional payments are part of its continuing effort to shield workers from economic pressure while keeping the state’s public service motivated and productive.
