Peace Accord: Tinubu Not Interested In Peaceful Election — Adebayo

Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, has accused President Bola Tinubu of showing a lack of commitment to peaceful elections following his absence from the National Peace Accord signing in Abuja.
The peace accord was signed on Tuesday by presidential candidates and national chairpersons of political parties participating in the 2027 general elections as part of efforts to ensure peaceful and issue-based campaigns.
Tinubu was represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Reacting to the President’s absence on Wednesday, Adebayo said it sent a wrong signal about the government’s commitment to peaceful elections.
“President Tinubu (@officialABAT) not showing up to the National Peace Accord signing yesterday shows that he is not committed to peace,” Adebayo stated.
He said the President’s absence could also send a negative message to law enforcement agencies and government workers.
“He is sending a wrong signal to law enforcement, to the people who work for the government, that he does not care about peaceful elections. He needs to make a clear statement explaining why he was absent and committing himself to the peace process,” he added.
The event was attended by several presidential candidates, including Adebayo and Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
However, the presidency had not immediately responded to Adebayo’s allegation.
Representing Tinubu at the ceremony, Akume said transparent elections would help reduce disputes and strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions.
He urged political parties and candidates to focus their campaigns on policies and avoid exploiting ethnic and religious divisions for political gains.
“Let us campaign on superior ideas. Let us debate issues and promote the best policies to expand opportunities for our people. Win or lose, our country, Nigeria, must be the ultimate winner,” Akume said.
