Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi is on the verge of completing a permanent transfer from Nottingham Forest to newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City.
A club-to-club agreement has been reached between the two English clubs, with the 29-year-old forward currently undergoing his medical ahead of finalising the move.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the breakthrough on Saturday, stating: “Coventry City agree deal to sign Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest, here we go! Club-to-club agreement done, permanent move and also understand medical is now ongoing. New striker for Frank Lampard.”
The deal represents a significant addition to Frank Lampard’s attacking options as Coventry prepare for their return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence.

The Sky Blues won the Championship title last season under Lampard and have been active in the transfer market to strengthen their squad for the step up in quality. Awoniyi will join fellow Nigeria international Frank Onyeka at the club, giving the Sky Blues a familiar Super Eagles presence in their ranks.
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in the summer of 2022 in what was then a club-record deal worth around £17.2 million. Over four seasons at the City Ground he made 103 appearances across all competitions, scoring 23 goals and contributing six assists.
In the Premier League specifically, the powerful forward recorded 21 goals in 90 appearances, establishing himself as a reliable goal threat during Forest’s early years back in the top flight.
His best campaign came in 2022-23, when he scored 10 Premier League goals in 27 appearances, including memorable winners against Liverpool and Arsenal that helped secure Forest’s survival.
Injuries hampered his progress in subsequent seasons, limiting his starts and seeing him drop down the pecking order behind other forwards. Last season he managed four goals in 17 Premier League outings, with most of those coming from the bench.
Before arriving in England, Awoniyi built a solid reputation across Europe. After time in Liverpool’s academy system and multiple loan spells, he flourished at Union Berlin, where he scored 20 goals in 43 appearances in his final full season before the move to Forest.
Across his senior club career he has scored more than 70 goals in over 270 appearances, combining physical strength, aerial ability and clinical finishing.
For Coventry, the signing brings proven Premier League experience to a squad adjusting to life among English football’s elite. Lampard has sought players who understand the demands of the top flight, and Awoniyi’s track record of scoring important goals in difficult matches makes him a logical target.
At 29 he remains in his prime and will be motivated by the opportunity of regular first-team football after limited starts in recent seasons at Forest.
