President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria after the athletes delivered an impressive performance at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Nigeria finished as the leading African nation with 24 medals: 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the competitors for flying the nation’s flag with dignity and pride throughout the competition.
He described the medals as “a testament to their hard work and perseverance” and noted that the experience gained would lay the foundation for even greater achievements in future international events while inspiring young Nigerians to embrace commitment and national service.

“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride,” Tinubu said.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the Games possible.”
The President also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their commitment to sports development and support for athletes. He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to invest in sports, strengthen sporting institutions, improve training facilities and create greater opportunities for talented athletes to excel on the continental and global stage.
Nigeria’s latest haul builds on a strong recent history at the Commonwealth Games. At the 2022 Games in Birmingham the country claimed 35 medals, including 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze, and topped the African medals table. At the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia, Team Nigeria returned with 24 medals made up of nine gold, nine silver and six bronze. The 2014 Games, also held in Glasgow, produced an even stronger result of 36 medals: 11 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze.
The Glasgow 2026 campaign once again showcased Nigerian resilience and talent across athletics, weightlifting, para-powerlifting and other disciplines. With continued investment and support, the athletes stand poised to build on this foundation and chase even higher podium finishes in the years ahead.
