The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has sparked reactions online after declaring himself the supreme and number one traditional ruler in Yorubaland.

The monarch made the declaration in a statement that has been circulating on social media, where he reaffirmed his position among Yoruba traditional rulers.

He said, “I am the supreme king in Yorubaland and the number one king in Yorubaland.”

His remarks have reignited conversations about the hierarchy of traditional rulers in Yorubaland, particularly his position in relation to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

The issue has previously generated controversy following disagreements between the two palaces over the Ooni’s conferment of the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on businessman Dotun Sanusi in August 2025. The Alaafin later maintained that he was not involved in any supremacy battle with other monarchs.
