Nigeria’s Super Falcons claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia on Sunday, overcoming a first-half red card and relentless pressure to keep their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title defence firmly on track.
Asisat Oshoala struck early to give the defending champions the lead. In the eighth minute she finished clinicaly to put Nigeria ahead, sparking celebrations among the Super Falcons faithful. The goal set the tone for what looked like a dominant display, but the match turned dramatically just before the break.
In the 40th minute referee showed Tosin Demehin a straight red card after a foul on Zambia captain Barbra Banda. The decision reduced Nigeria to 10 players and handed the Copper Queens a clear numerical advantage. Zambia poured forward in search of an equaliser, yet the Super Falcons refused to fold.

Coach Justin Madugu’s side produced a disciplined and organised second-half performance. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made several important saves while the defensive unit stood firm against wave after wave of Zambian attacks. Despite playing the entire second half a player short, Nigeria protected their slender lead with determination and composure.
After the final whistle Madugu praised his players’ mentality. “We never panicked,” he told reporters. “That calmness allowed us to stay focused and see the game out.”
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade highlighted the strength within the squad. “We possess real depth and we always give thanks to God for the result,” she said.
Michelle Alozie, named player of the match, spoke about the team’s spirit. “This group is a lot of fun. We keep our energy high, we enjoy making TikToks together, and the bond we share is special.”
The victory leaves the Super Falcons in a strong position in Group C. They now turn their attention to their final group match against Egypt on Wednesday. Egypt have yet to pick up a point after suffering defeats in their opening two fixtures.
A positive result against the North Africans would virtually guarantee Nigeria’s place in the knockout stages as they chase a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
