The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has expressed concern over fresh attacks by suspected armed Fulani terrorists, which claimed the lives of two youths in Rim and Wereng communities in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
LEADERSHIP reports that the victims were identified as Joel Bwede, 39, and Justice Dadong, 22. Their deaths have left their families and communities in grief.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the BYM said it was particularly concerned that human lives were increasingly being reduced to mere numbers in recurring reports of killings.
“Each casualty represents a family shattered, dreams cut short, and a community left traumatised,” the association said.
According to the statement, the situation must not become the new normal in Plateau State.
The association strongly condemned the attacks and called on the Federal and Plateau State Governments, as well as security agencies, to do more to safeguard citizens’ lives and property.
“The protection of lives and property is a primary responsibility of government, as expressly provided under Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” it said.
The BYM therefore demanded a stronger security presence in vulnerable communities, improved intelligence gathering and rapid-response mechanisms, as well as the immediate investigation, arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attacks.
The association extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of Rim, while urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
“Government must do more. Every life matters, and the people of Plateau deserve to live in safety, dignity and peace,” the statement said.
