Serving Senator Mohammed Onawo became the governorship candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Nasarawa State after delegates affirmed his nomination on Saturday in Lafia.
The decision by party members across all 13 Local Government Areas fills the empty spot left by former candidate Dr Mohamed Auwal, who stood down from the race.
The replacement gives the political organisation a lawmaker who currently represents Nasarawa South at the National Assembly.
Officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission, alongside security operatives, supervised the exercise inside the state capital.
Experience and strategy
Auwal, who also serves as the party’s state leader, cleared the path by voluntarily surrendering the nomination.
He explained that stepping down was necessary to preserve unity and place forward a candidate with a wider political reach before the statewide poll.
Describing Onawo as a grassroots figure, Auwal confirmed that party workers will launch campaigns across all 13 local government councils to secure victory.

Accepting the mandate, Onawo highlighted his long career in public office as his primary qualification.
He previously served two terms in the House of Representatives and held office as Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly before his election to the Senate.
“As a two-term House of Representatives member, Former Speaker of the state House of Assembly and now a Senator, I have built alliances across the state and beyond, therefore I will be the next governor of the state by the grace of God,” Onawo told party members.
The candidate noted that his political ties and legislative work make him a strong substitute for voters.
He promised an administration focused on delivering results to households, naming security, public infrastructure, farming, basic education and job creation as his major priorities.
“I accept this nomination with humility and a strong commitment to serve the people of Nasarawa State. Together with APM, we will build a state where every citizen has opportunity and hope,” he said.
Looking ahead to the upcoming contest, Onawo voiced confidence about winning the state house, provided electoral officers conduct a transparent vote.
