Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has vowed to stand firm in protecting votes during the 2027 presidential election, declaring that he is ready to risk his life to ensure that Nigerians’ votes count.
Obi made the declaration on Thursday at a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he urged Nigerians to remain resolute and prevent a repeat of what he described as irregularities witnessed during the 2023 general election.
Speaking at the event tagged “Obi Talks Nigeria,” the former Anambra State governor said Nigerians must be prepared to defend their votes at polling units and ensure that no one intimidates them during the election.
He said, “We need to be firm and demand that the votes must count. And that is the demand.
“Be rest assured, go into that campaign believing that all of us will rescue our country.
“Some of us will say we are ready to die. Let me tell you, I’m equally ready to die. So you’re not alone.”
Obi also expressed concern about possible manipulation of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV), saying his supporters would be prepared to counter any attempt to disrupt the electronic transmission of election results.
He said, “Yes, they are going to manipulate the IReV, but let me tell you, it will not be easy this time.
“There will be so many IReVs. So if your own doesn’t work, our own will work. This time around, if their own has glitch, we will give them the one that doesn’t have glitch.
“Because by allowing that to continue, that glitch will glitch our lives. That’s why we are suffering today.”
Obi further urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 election with determination, saying the responsibility of rescuing the country rested on the people.
He said citizens must be willing to participate actively in the electoral process and ensure that their votes are protected and counted.
