Your university years are some of the most transformative times of your life. More than anything, they steer you toward your career and financial goals.
But to get to the job or career of your dreams, you don’t need to wait until you’re handed your diploma. Here are eight things you can do ahead of graduation to strengthen your place in the corporate world.
It’s natural for students to only realise they’re transitioning into the workforce when they’re about to graduate, but your CV will look much stronger if you start working toward your career goals right from the jump.
Doing internships and part-time jobs to put experience on your CV is great, but companies look for talent alongside experience. Create projects. Write articles. Design things. Build a portfolio that can stand for you after graduating.
If you master a high-income skill in the years it takes you to complete your course, you leave school with an advantage that even working-class people don’t yet have. It makes you a prime canditate for companies.
It’s common advice, but it’s also necessary.
You never know who you could meet who could lead you to the next glittering opportunity. Go to those school fairs. Send out those cold pitches. You might get noticed.
People can only know your greatness when you display it. Start with a LinkedIn profile, and optimise it with your experiences, even the smallest ones.
To know where you’re going, it’s important you know who’s already there. Watch out for people who are at the top of your desired field, and study the steps they took to get there.
Apply for opportunities you don’t think you’re 100% qualified for. Reach out to employers even if you don’t think they’ll answer. Take as many long shots as you can, knowing that half the success is the fact that you even tried.
This doesn’t mean your degree is useless, but in the corporate world, you need to be more than what you’re studying. Explore what you want to do with your life now while the stakes are lower.
