Borno police arrest four over bank fraud, recover 40 ATM cards

Four suspects have been arrested in Borno State over the fraudulent withdrawal of ₦285,000 from a resident’s bank account.

The suspects allegedly posed as Moniepoint agents before collecting the victim’s phone and accessing his account in Maiduguri.

The Borno State Police Command disclosed this in a press release issued on Thursday. It said operatives also recovered 40 OPay and Moniepoint ATM cards from the suspects.

The victim, identified as Unus Burum, from Shuwari II, Maiduguri, reported the incident to the police on 25 October.

He told the police that two young men approached him around 2pm, claiming they were Moniepoint agents who could provide banking services.

Burum requested an increase in his transaction limit. The suspects then collected his mobile phone and successfully logged into his account.

The police said the men subsequently withdrew ₦285,000 from the account without his authorisation.

Police trace transactions, arrest four suspects

The Command said operatives of its State Intelligence Department (SID), the unit responsible for intelligence gathering and investigations, began investigating after receiving the complaint.

Their investigation reportedly led them to the agents involved in the Point of Sale (POS) transactions.

Further police investigations resulted in the arrest of four suspects over the alleged conspiracy and theft.
