American YouTuber and philanthropist MrBeast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, has unveiled a major community development project in Ghana’s Eastern Region, with Abna Dakwa Village receiving widespread attention.
The project, reported to have cost nearly US$10 million, was built over about eight months and is aimed at giving children and families in a cocoa-growing community better access to education, healthcare, clean water and economic opportunities.
At the centre of the development is a new school designed to accommodate more than 300 students. The project also includes 10 homes for teachers, a medical clinic and a community marketplace.
Clean-water infrastructure and an off-grid solar power system have also been installed to improve access to water and electricity. Agricultural facilities, fish tanks and a chicken coop form part of the community’s livelihood and food-production facilities.
Residents have also been provided with improved sanitation facilities, while children have access to a football field and playground.
Another major component is a school-feeding programme under which students are expected to receive free meals on every school day for five years, with support from The Rockefeller Foundation.
MrBeast’s project is focused on addressing conditions that can push children into labour on cocoa farms by improving access to education and basic services.
