Social commentator and businessman Isaac Fayose has claimed that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, would win the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the 2027 presidential election.
Fayose made the claim on Tuesday while appearing on News Central TV, in response to recent comments by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, on the opposition’s popularity in Abuja.
Wike had described the 2027 presidential election as an easy contest, insisting that President Bola Tinubu would win both Rivers State and the FCT.
Fayose disagreed with the minister, asserting that Obi and the NDC have significant support in Abuja.
“Abuja is NDC, Abuja is Peter Obi,” he said.
Fayose also raised concerns about the possibility of voter suppression and alleged manipulation of election results, saying the opposition was working on strategies to prevent such incidents.
He said the major concern was not whether people were willing to vote, but the possibility of efforts to suppress their votes during the election.
“People are ready to vote. All we are scared of now is what angle are they going to suppress us from this time? This is the only area we are trying to fine-tune,” Fayose said.
He also urged Nigerians to engage in more informal polling and opinion-gathering ahead of the election to gauge voters’ preferences.
“Go to the street and try to talk to one or two people. Ask them, ‘Who are you going to vote for?’”
Fayose further compared Nigeria’s electoral environment with practices in other countries, saying mock elections and opinion polls could provide an indication of public sentiment before election day.
“Abroad, before the proper election, they seek people’s opinions on who they want to vote for through mock elections. We don’t do that in Nigeria, but we need to start doing it,” he added.
Fayose’s comments come amid increasing political activity and competing claims about the strength of various parties and candidates ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
