The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has intensified raids on crime-prone areas across the state as part of efforts to recover illegal firearms and prevent violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The intensified operations have led to the arrest of a 23-year-old suspected cult leader who was allegedly found in possession of a locally made shotgun and live ammunition in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this on Monday at the command headquarters in Ikot Akpanabia, while briefing journalists on the latest operational achievements.
John said the suspect, identified as Mfon Essien of Ikot Inyang Itak Village, Ikono Local Government Area, was arrested on September 6, 2026, following credible intelligence provided by concerned residents.
She said police operatives intercepted Essien at about 12:30 p.m. along Aya Road, off Uyo Road, Ikot Ekpene, and recovered one locally made shotgun loaded with a live cartridge concealed in his clothing.
“The suspect was immediately arrested, while the recovered firearm and ammunition were secured as exhibits. He is currently in Police custody undergoing thorough interrogation and investigation,” John said.
She added that investigators were working to establish the source of the firearm, the purpose for which it was being carried and whether the suspect had links with other individuals or criminal networks involved in the acquisition, movement or use of illegal firearms.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the command’s determination to clamp down on the unlawful possession and circulation of firearms across the state.
Azare said the command would continue to deploy intelligence-led policing, targeted raids, patrols and other lawful crime-prevention measures to ensure illegal weapons were removed from the streets before they could be used to perpetrate violent crimes.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and provide the police with timely and credible information on suspicious persons, illegal firearms and other criminal activities.
The commissioner assured members of the public that the identities of informants would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and sustaining the prevailing peace and security across the state,” Azare said.
