The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has defended its decision to withhold portions of investigative records linked to an ongoing probe involving Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.
The US government made the defence in a court filing dated September 23, 2026, in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed before a Washington, DC court.
The case was instituted by American activist Aaron Greenspan, who requested records from US agencies relating to investigations involving Tinubu and other individuals.
In its latest filing, the US government argued that the DEA withheld parts of the records to protect confidential sources, investigative techniques and other sensitive law enforcement information.
The government said the DEA relied on sworn declarations and a detailed index to explain why certain portions of the requested records were exempt from disclosure under US freedom of information laws.
According to the filing, the records include various investigative reports generated during DEA operations, including documents identified as DEA-6, DEA-292 and DEA-210.
The agency maintained that information capable of identifying confidential sources receives strong protection under US freedom of information laws.
“Due to the significant protections afforded to prevent the disclosure of this type of information, DEA determined that the significance of exempting this type of information outweighed the relatively insignificant public interest in the disclosure of the information,” the agency said.
