The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm over an alleged plan by purported Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) local government executives to take over council secretariats across the state.
Politics Nigeria reports that the APC, in a statement signed by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, alleged that the PDP chairmen and councillors had concluded arrangements to invade the 30 local government secretariats and the Area Office on Thursday, September 3.
The party claimed that political hoodlums allegedly recruited from within and outside Osun State would be deployed to execute the planned takeover.
According to the APC, the alleged plan followed the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke, which it claimed had emboldened the purported PDP council executives to regroup and push ahead with the takeover attempt.
The opposition party further alleged that the plan was being coordinated with some officials of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), accusing the union of acting in the interest of the state government.
The APC urged the Osun State Police Command, Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to take proactive steps to forestall any attempt to disrupt public order.
It argued that the dispute over the local government councils remained before the Court of Appeal in Akure, Ondo State, and that the parties involved should await the outcome of the judicial process.
The party also cited a Supreme Court judgment relating to one of the suits instituted by the purported PDP council executives, claiming that the court had described them as persons unknown to law.
“There is no tact and diplomacy in a set of hoodlums teaming up to promote disruption of public peace in the state on a matter that is still very much alive in the Court of Appeal,” the APC said.
It warned the purported PDP chairmen against taking steps outside the courts, describing any such action as “a monumental illegality.”
This was just as the party also recalled the killing of one of the reinstated APC council chairmen, Remi Abass of Irewole Local Government Area, alleging that he was killed by suspected PDP thugs who are currently facing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
It therefore called on security agencies to closely monitor the activities of the purported PDP council executives and NULGE officials in the event of any attempt to breach public peace.
The APC’s allegation comes as the Osun State Government has inaugurated two investigative bodies to probe alleged violence and unlawful activities reported before and after the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
Recall that the panels were inaugurated on Wednesday at the Ministry of Justice Conference Hall, Abere, by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, on behalf of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
One of the bodies, the Commission of Inquiry, is mandated to investigate reported incidents of violence, intimidation, assault, destruction of property, unlawful possession or use of weapons, breaches of public peace and other alleged unlawful activities across the state.
Jimi-Bada said the commission was established following reports, petitions and concerns raised by members of the public over incidents surrounding the election.
He said the government was committed to establishing the facts and ensuring accountability while stressing that the inquiry was not targeted at any individual, political party, candidate, group, public officer or security agency.
“Elections are the foundation of democracy. Citizens must be able to participate freely and peacefully in the democratic process without fear, intimidation or violence,” he said.
The Attorney-General described the commission as a lawful fact-finding body established to ascertain the truth, identify affected persons, determine responsibility where supported by credible evidence and recommend measures capable of strengthening public peace.
He said the commission would not shield anyone found culpable, adding that credible evidence of wrongdoing should lead to firm, fair and lawful recommendations.
The panel is expected to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the alleged incidents, identify persons or groups involved where evidence permits, determine those affected and assess damage to property.
It will also receive memoranda, petitions, oral and written evidence, documents, photographs, videos and other relevant materials from witnesses, political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, journalists, traditional institutions and members of the public.
Jimi-Bada urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the commission and warned against intimidation of witnesses, suppression of evidence, harassment of petitioners or interference with its proceedings.
The Commission of Inquiry is chaired by Justice Abdurazaq Abdulkareem, with Barrister Biodun Badiora as Secretary. Its other members are R. Faremi, Maruff Adediran, Comrade Waheed Lawal, AIG Aderanti Kayode (rtd), Dr Adeyemi Aboderin, Dr Azeez Morufu Olakunle and Abodunrin Matthew Adeyinka.
The separate Coroner’s Inquest into the Ikire killings is chaired by Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola, with Barrister Biodun Badiora as Secretary. Its members include AIG Aderanti Kayode, Dele Akintayo, Comrade Wale Balogun, Alhaji Akinkunmi Taliat Lanrewaju and Dr Babatunde Afolabi, Chief Medical Director of UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital.
