The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Sule Lamido University in Kafin Hausa has delayed its planned warning strike until the end of October, giving the Jigawa State Government more time to resolve ongoing issues at the institution.
The union had originally scheduled the strike to begin today over unresolved matters, mainly the implementation of the 2025 ASUU-FGN Agreement and payment of unpaid allowances owed to staff members.
After new talks between the union and the state government, officials asked for additional time to address these concerns, and the union agreed.
Following a special congress meeting on Monday, ASUU-SLUK resolved to allow the government until the end of October to fully implement the 2025 agreement and settle all outstanding arrears dating back to January 2026.
However, the union made clear this extension doesn’t mean they’re backing down from their demands.
If the government fails to meet these commitments by then, the union will launch a total and indefinite strike starting November 3.
The union acknowledged the state government’s efforts to resolve the issues and noted the directive to restructure the payroll software to better suit the university’s needs.
They also took note of government assurances regarding additional funding and the ongoing matter of local government contributions to the institution.
The decision gives the government a chance to settle outstanding matters without disrupting academic activities, but implementation of the agreement and payment of arrears remain non-negotiable.
