- Seeks Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections
The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has affirmed former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, as the leader of the party in the South-West.
Atiku made the declaration on Thursday while addressing leaders and members of the ADC at a meeting of the party’s South-West leadership led by the zonal chairman, Akin Omole.
The development was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary of the Osun ADC, Adelani Baderinwa, on Thursday.
According to the statement, Atiku said there had never been any dispute over the leadership of the ADC in the South-West, adding that Aregbesola had earned the position through his political experience, mobilisation and organisational capacity.
He said, “Ogbeni Aregbesola earned his leadership in the region, having occupied vital political offices, coupled with his vibrancy in political mobilisation and organisation.”
Atiku also commended the South-West leadership for convening the meeting, saying efforts would be made to reconcile differences among party leaders in the zone in the interest of the ADC.
He urged leaders across the six South-West states to close ranks and work together towards securing victory for the party in the 2027 general elections.
“We will do everything humanly possible to reconcile the differences among our leaders for the good of the party.
“I call on all our leaders in the zone to close ranks and work assiduously together to achieve success in the coming election,” he said.
Earlier, Omole told the ADC presidential candidate that persistent disagreements among party leaders across the six states had affected the growth and progress of the party in the region.
He explained that the meeting was convened to find solutions to the challenges confronting the party and strengthen its structures ahead of the 2027 elections.
Omole urged Atiku and other national leaders present at the meeting to assist in resolving the issues identified by a committee constituted to examine the situation within the party in the South-West.
He subsequently presented the committee’s report to Atiku.
The meeting also called on party leaders to reconcile their differences, close ranks and work towards repositioning the ADC for what they described as a resounding victory in the 2027 general elections.
