Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 13-year-old boy, Mubarak Mohd, after allegedly pulling the trigger of a loaded Dane gun in Udubo village, Gamawa local government area.
The command said the incident occurred on 5th September, 2026, when 35-year-old Suleiman Hamza, a hunter from the same village, reportedly returned from hunting and left his loaded Dane gun inside his room amnd went out.
The police said Mubarak entered the room and allegedly pulled the trigger of the firearm, causing it to discharge and inflict fatal injuries on him.
In a statement issued yesterday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, said upon receiving the report, detectives attached to the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters mobilised to the scene and commenced preliminary investigations.
He said the victim was evacuated to the General Hospital, Gamawa, where the medical doctor on duty confirmed him dead.
“Photographs were taken, and the remains were released to the relatives for burial in accordance with Islamic rites,” the statement said.
The command added that the suspect had been arrested, that preliminary investigations had been concluded, and that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation.
In another development, the command said its operatives foiled an armed robbery on the Kajala-Kere Road on the outskirts of Burra and recovered two motorcycles allegedly stolen by the suspected robbers.
SP Habib said that on September 5, police received a report from the Officer-in-Charge of the Kajala Police Outpost that unidentified hoodlums, armed with cutlasses and sticks, had blocked the Kajala-Kere road.
He said the suspects allegedly dispossessed Ado and three other male residents of Kere village of two Bajaj motorcycles, two Android phones and a power bank.
Following the report, a combined team of police officers from the Burra Division and local vigilantes was swiftly mobilised to the scene.
According to him, the suspects fled upon sighting the security team, abandoning the two stolen motorcycles and aborting the robbery.
The operatives recovered the motorcycles and searched the surrounding bushes in an effort to apprehend the fleeing suspects, recover the remaining stolen items and bring those responsible to justice.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the operatives for their prompt response, which he said helped foil the robbery.
He, however, expressed sadness over the fatal shooting in Gamawa and cautioned hunters and other firearm owners to handle weapons with utmost care and ensure that firearms are kept away from children.
The Commissioner urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to the police, assuring the public of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
