A tense scene unfolded at the Lagos State High Court on Thursday when a judge ordered the immediate arrest of a man dressed in lawyer’s regalia after discovering he was not a qualified legal practitioner.
The man had appeared in court to represent a client but was taken into custody after the judge questioned his credentials as a lawyer.
In footage that circulated online, the judge was heard ordering officers to remove the man’s wig and arrest him on the spot, directing the man to take off his legal gown as he was not a registered lawyer.
The situation escalated when the man allegedly attempted to flee the courtroom immediately after the arrest order was given.
The judge loudly instructed police officers that an impostor was in the courtroom and directed them to apprehend him.
The incident comes roughly a month after the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja convicted a fifty five year old man for impersonating a legal practitioner and illegally using a counterfeit seal of the Nigerian Bar Association.
The continued cases highlight an ongoing problem of individuals fraudulently presenting themselves as qualified lawyers to unsuspecting clients.
