Talk about irony as gunshots go off near where a trial is being held for Tupac Shakur‘s murder by shooting.
Police reportedly rushed to a nearby Starbucks in downtown Las Vegas after receiving calls about a possible shooting. The incident happened blocks from where a jury is hearing the case against Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis.
The long-awaited murder case finally moves forward nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was killed in Paradise, Nevada, near the Las Vegas Strip. Davis has pleaded not guilty to staging the 1996 shooting.
Police arrived at Starbucks in downtown Las Vegas on Tuesday afternoon after receiving reports of a possible shooting. Officers arrived at the coffee shop and found no victims. The incident reportedly happened only blocks from the Clark County District Court Regional Justice Center.
The courthouse is currently hosting the trial of Davis, who faces accusations of involvement in Tupac’s death. Prosecutors allege that Davis planned the fatal shooting after Tupac attacked his relative earlier that night. They also claim Davis provided the gun to the person who shot the rapper.
The nearby incident unfolded while the high-profile case was already attracting attention. Davis’ trial continues as prosecutors attempt to prove his alleged role in the 1996 killing. The reported shooting did not result in any known injuries, per TMZ.
The Rap Legend’s Murder Case Moves Forward Nearly 30 Years Later
4Nearly three decades after Tupac’s death, prosecutors have finally opened Davis’ murder trial. Davis, however, has maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty.
The case centers on the events of September 7, 1996, when Tupac was riding in a BMW driven by Marion “Suge” Knight. A white Cadillac pulled alongside the vehicle near the Las Vegas Strip before gunfire erupted. The Blast shared the details about the shooting.
A former police officer from Las Vegas testified that Tupac refused to give the name of his shooter. Prosecutors accuse Davis of planning the attack and providing the weapon used. The accused will face life in prison if found guilty.
Tupac Shakur’s Murder Suspect Scoffed At Being Arrested
4Davis spent years publicly discussing his alleged connection to Tupac’s killing before authorities eventually arrested him. He reportedly told people around him that police would never take action against him. Davis had said to his friends that, “the police ain’t gonna do sh-t.”
According to reports cited by The Blast, Davis even bragged about his involvement in Tupac’s death. He reportedly mocked the possibility of facing justice and believed authorities couldn’t build a case against him. In 2023, he was arrested and charged with the murder of Tupac.
Prosecutors also charged Davis with one count of murder in connection with Tupac’s death. The prosecutors also sought an additional sentence for alleged gang activity. The accused has yet to be found guilty of the crimes.
The Iconic Rapper’s Death Still Raises Questions Decades Later
4Tupac’s murder has remained one of hip-hop’s most closely followed unsolved killings for decades. A gunman fatally shot the 25-year-old rapper in Las Vegas. His death came during a period of intense tension in the hip-hop world.
The state has charged only Davis in connection with the drive-by shooting. He also remains the only living person who sat inside the vehicle during the fatal shooting. The case therefore places renewed attention on the events surrounding Tupac’s final night.
The nearby shooting has now added an unexpected moment to an already historic trial. Police found no victims at the Starbucks, while proceedings against Davis continue at the nearby courthouse. After almost 3 decades, Tupac’s death case is finally being decided by a jury.
Tupac Shakur’s Oakland Legacy Remains Strong
Tupac was deeply connected to Oakland and its hip-hop culture. The rapper moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with his mother in the late 1980s. He later lived in Oakland during the early 1990s and embraced the city as his adopted hometown.
In 2023, part of MacArthur Boulevard near where Tupac once lived was renamed Tupac Shakur Way. His family members attended the ceremony alongside several notable figures from Oakland’s hip-hop community. MC Hammer, E-40, Money-B and Too Short were among those connected to the tribute.
Tupac’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, also spoke during the ceremony, as reported by AP News. She urged the crowd to keep her brother’s spirit alive through the streets and in their hearts. The tribute showed that his influence remains deeply rooted in the community he once called home.
