A federal lawmaker, Hon. Chinedu Ogah, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate businessman and socialite Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, following his recent comments about Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru.
Ogah made the call while addressing a press briefing in the state, where he criticised Cubana Chief Priest over comments he said were directed at the governor.
The lawmaker, who was accompanied by members of the Tinubu Support Group in Ebonyi State, questioned Cubana Chief Priest’s basis for speaking against the governor, describing Nwifuru as one of the best-performing governors in Nigeria.
Ogah said, “The question I want to ask, who is Kubana Chief Priest? Who is he? What did he do? What is his address that give him an impetus to speak against our Governor, the most performing Governor in Nigeria, Chief Francis Nwifuru?”
He further questioned the source of Cubana Chief Priest’s wealth and called on the EFCC to examine his financial activities.
“What is the address of his business? I’m urging EFC that should investigate him, investigate his account, investigate all the things he do,” Ogah said.
The lawmaker also alleged that Cubana Chief Priest had been involved in activities that affected government efforts in the South-East. He said he was prepared to defend the allegations if challenged.
“I stand to be challenged. He arranged that and such person will come now to speak because he wants to cover all that Mr. President with his illicit business is doing,” he alleged.
Ogah also questioned Cubana Chief Priest’s political standing, arguing that his popularity should be reflected in electoral success.
“If he said he’s popular, why is it that he could not win the primary of the election he contested in Anambra?” he asked.
The lawmaker accused Cubana Chief Priest of insulting Ebonyi people, including youths, women, leaders and members of the National Assembly, by speaking against the governor.
“He should withdraw that statement and apologise to Ebonyians,” Ogah said.
He maintained that such comments could undermine support for President Bola Tinubu in the South-East, arguing that individuals making such statements should not be presented as supporters of the President.
Ogah also urged the media to be cautious about giving publicity to individuals whose activities, according to him, could undermine the administration’s political interests in the region.
“For what our Governor is doing, and most of the media here can attest to it, in that, who is he to speak for Ebonyi? Who is he to speak against our Governor?” he asked.
He concluded by insisting that Cubana Chief Priest’s comments were unacceptable and should be withdrawn.
“That statement is not acceptable by most of us,” Ogah said.
