Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has said he plans to retire from active politics after completing his tenure as governor, ruling out a future bid for the Senate or any other political position.
Otti made the remarks in Umuahia while speaking about leadership succession and his plans after leaving office.
The governor said he believed political leaders should eventually create room for younger people to take over rather than remain in politics indefinitely.
Otti says younger people should take over
Speaking about his political future, Otti said, “We need to take the back seat. I keep saying it, I’m not interested in any other position including senate. I will retire from politics after my tenure. I want the young people to take over.”
His comments are consistent with earlier statements in which he said he had no presidential, vice presidential or senatorial ambition after his tenure as governor.
Otti has also previously said he does not want to become a political godfather or impose a successor on Abia State.
Governor speaks on leadership succession
In a separate statement reported in September 2026, Otti said he wanted the person who succeeds him to be better equipped to provide quality leadership, adding that he did not want a “sit tight” approach to political leadership.
The governor’s position has renewed discussion about political succession in Abia and the role of younger people in future leadership.
He has maintained that his political journey is tied to his current mandate and that he intends to step aside when his tenure ends.
