Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has claimed that the records of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, still show that he won the 2023 presidential election.
Obi made the statement while speaking to a foreign journalist, insisting that although INEC announced a different winner, the commission’s records had not been altered.
“I won in 2023 and INEC record still shows it, they’ve not been able to change it even though they announced something different. It’s still there on INEC’s record,” Obi said.
However, INEC’s published 2023 General Election Report currently lists Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress as the candidate marked “ELECTED,” with 8,794,726 votes, while Obi was recorded with 6,101,533 votes.
The 2023 presidential election outcome was challenged in court by Obi and Atiku Abubakar. The Presidential Election Petitions Court affirmed Tinubu’s election in September 2023, and the Supreme Court dismissed Obi’s appeal and upheld Tinubu’s election on October 26, 2023.
Obi has continued to maintain publicly that he won the election despite not being declared the winner.
