Nigerian filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan has explained why an increasing number of Nigerian filmmakers are taking their movies to YouTube.
Speaking in a recent interview, Afolayan attributed the trend largely to the strength of the US dollar against the naira, which he said makes YouTube earnings particularly attractive to content creators.
According to the filmmaker, with the exchange rate around N1,400 to $1, filmmakers can make significant income from high-performing videos on the platform. He illustrated this by noting that a movie or video that attracts one million views could generate as much as $10,000.
Afolayan, however, suggested that the situation could change if the naira gains substantial value against the dollar.
He said that if the exchange rate eventually drops to about N200 to $1, many filmmakers would likely lose interest in YouTube and explore other platforms or avenues for distributing their films.
His comments have sparked conversations about the influence of foreign exchange rates on Nigeria’s creative industry and the growing appeal of digital platforms among filmmakers.
