Jane Fonda Stands Tall Against Trump, Declares She’s Not ‘Scared’: ‘He Can Do Nothing To Me’

Jane Fonda is putting up a fight against what she believes is the growing influence of the wealthy who prioritize their interests over the well-being of others. 

The “Grace and Frankie” actress has long been outspoken on social and political issues, frequently using her platform to advocate for causes she believes in.

Earlier this year, when Paramount emerged as a frontrunner to acquire Warner Bros., Fonda voiced concerns about the implications of the proposed deal.

Now, she is once again speaking out, turning her attention to powerful figures whom she believes are shaping society to serve their own interests.

At the 17th annual DVF Awards on Thursday, Fonda spoke on a range of topics, from the mergers to politics and even criticizing the elite’s obsession with immortality. 

When asked about her thoughts on the elite’s ambitions to chase immortality, the “9 to 5” star did not hold back in slamming them. “They want to live forever, while they’re killing the rest of us,” the 88-year-old said, according to Variety.

She singled out “tech bros, oligarchs, and billionaires” who, in her view, believe they can defy natural laws, and warned that their creation of robots could take away freedom of choice. 

However, she emphasized that it won’t happen like that. “They’re not going to win, because we’re not going to stand for it,” the Oscar winner declared.

Fonda also reflected on her decades of activism, which began when she was 33. When asked whether it has gotten harder to speak out since Trump’s reemergence, Fonda made it clear that it hasn’t changed anything for her. 

“No. I’ve had my life. He can do nothing to me. I’m not scared,” she shared, per The Hollywood Reporter, while acknowledging that not everyone had the same privilege. 

The Hollywood veteran also turned her attention to the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. and once again expressed her concerns about its implications. 

She noted that, despite her personal admiration for David Ellison, the deal would be terrible for consumers and would also cause several people to lose their jobs. 

She also revealed that her ex-husband, Ted Turner, would likely be “upset,” recalling his past refusal to sell.

A Look At Fonda’s History Of Speaking Up

Fonda’s recent comment about the mergers echoes her stance on it. In March, she opposed it, very much concerned about the president’s interest in it. 

As The Blast previously reported, the 88-year-old referenced a statement from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in which he had suggested that “CNN can’t come soon enough to be under the control of Paramount.” She connected the comment to a wider picture that reflects Trump’s desire to dominate the media. 

While opposing what she sees as political control of the media, the actress has been championing free speech. 

Last October, the actress announced the revival of the Committee for the First Amendment. The group was originally founded by her father and other entertainment icons to defend free speech during turbulent times.

As part of her efforts, Fonda has also used her platform to emphasize the collective strength of workers and the role of actors in society at large. 

While giving her acceptance speech at the 2025 SAG Life Achievement Award, Fonda explained that solidarity is essential in today’s climate, where worker power is under attack, and communities are being weakened.

According to The Blast, the “Monster-In-Law” star noted that it is the job of actors to create emotional connections and pushed back against the idea that empathy is a weakness. 

George Clooney Also Defended Independent Journalism

Fonda is not the only Hollywood star speaking out about threats to a free and independent press. George Clooney has been making a similar case.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival earlier this week, Clooney delivered a passionate defense of journalism and storytelling, arguing that those in positions of power often seek to undermine both.

“We’re living through a moment in time where people in charge, the people with the most money, are telling us to fear one another,” he said, as The Blast reported.

Clooney then noted that history shows authoritarian leaders frequently target journalists before politicians because stories have the power to challenge fear-driven narratives.
