The Federal Government has promised Kano State more fighting vehicles, weapons and other equipment after troops rescued several kidnapped victims following the 29 August bandit attack on Chiroma village in Garun Mallam Local Government Area. Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, made the pledge in Kano on Monday during a condolence and assessment visit to the state government.
The visit came two days after the attack and followed a joint security operation led by Brigadier General Saka Jimoh, Commander of the 3 Brigade, Kano.
Matawalle said personnel from the Joint Task Force operating from the Hawan-Kwano and Kwanar Dangora camps took part in the operation. The troops rescued several kidnapped victims around the Yan-Kifi Bridge and Marabar Kwari areas of Garun Mallam Local Government Area.
The minister said the Federal Government would provide more resources to help security agencies protect lives and property. He also met commanders of the 3 Brigade and other security formations in Kano behind closed doors.
Rescue operation follows attack
Matawalle said the security forces had started the joint operation after the Chiroma village attack. He commended the troops involved in the rescue of the kidnapped victims.
He said President Bola Tinubu had set up a committee to prepare a five-year defence and security strategy. The strategy is intended to provide a long-term plan for dealing with security threats in Nigeria.
“The president has set up a committee to formulate a five-year defence and security strategy. The plan will provide a framework for addressing security threats across the country over the long term,” Matawalle said.

The minister said the government was intensifying security operations and planning to restore lasting peace in the country. He said defeating insecurity would require cooperation among the federal, state and local governments.
Matawalle also said citizens must provide credible information to security agencies to help them deal with security threats.
“We will continue to provide every necessary support to our security agencies to keep the country safe. I am confident that insecurity will soon become a thing of the past, allowing Nigerians to live in peace and prosperity,” he said.
He pledged more Federal Government support for Kano State through fighting vehicles, weapons and other operational equipment.
Matawalle also charged security commanders in Kano to sustain their ongoing operations and intensify protection for communities.
He said the Federal Government would continue to provide resources and support needed to protect lives and property and safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
Kano backs federal security plan
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, thanked Matawalle for visiting the state after the attack and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the Federal Government on security.
“We have confidence in your leadership. At the state level, we will continue to take the necessary steps to promote security and maintain stability in Kano,” Yusuf said.
The governor also said Kano had taken note of President Tinubu’s commitment to improving security in Nigeria.
“We have taken note of the President’s commitment to strengthening security in Nigeria, and we will work to ensure that insecurity does not persist in our domain.”
The federal plan for a five-year defence and security strategy now sits alongside the security operations already underway in Kano.
The government has also pledged more equipment for security forces in the state, following the operation that led to the rescue of several kidnapped victims after the Chiroma attack.
