Marvel Star Simu Liu Hits Back At Trump Over Lake Ontario Name Change

Actor Simu Liu has voiced strong opposition to Donald Trump‘s recent executive order to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” saying it’s too late.

Despite his thoughts, the President has seemingly gotten his way, as the name change has since been reflected on Google Maps.

Liu has remained an outspoken critic of the Trump administration and its policies. In 2025, he called Trump’s proposed tax plan benefiting high-income earners “really sh-tty” and slammed the “backslide” of Asian representation in Hollywood as “f-cking appalling.”

Simu Liu seemingly continued his jibe against Donald Trump and his administration when he mocked him over the recent name change of Lake Ontario.

Amid souring relations with Canada, which also houses the popular body of water, Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on Thursday, August 27.

He also slammed Canada, saying they’ve “been ripping us off for a long time on trade,” per PEOPLE.

“They want to be treated like they’re a state and we just can’t do that anymore,” he added. “It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time.”

However, the “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” actor noted that his executive order was seemingly just a waste of time.

“It’s Lake Ontario, and it always will be,” he wrote on X.

Fans took to the comments section to react to Liu’s remark, but a handful appeared dissatisfied with him.

“Dude, get a life. Sad that someone can trigger you this bad,” an X user told the actor, while another added, “Don’t you have more important things to do/worry about?”

“Shut up! America controls almost half, so we have a right to name it what we want!” a fiery commenter wrote in part, as another told Liu, “It’s called Lake America now buddy; keep crying.”

“Where was this outrage when they changed the names of Ryerson University and Dundas Square? You’re so fucking performative, and you don’t speak for us Torontonians,” someone else noted.

However, others were supportive of him, with one writing, “As an American who isn’t part of the cult, I agree with this statement.”

As reported by The Blast, Google Maps has already implemented the order to reflect the new name and how the famous lake appears on the platform.

The change is specific to U.S. users, while those in Canada continue to see “Lake Ontario.” People in other countries will get to see both names displayed.

“These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now,” Google said in a statement, per AP News.

Liu has remained an outspoken figure on controversial political topics and doesn’t hesitate to slam some of Trump’s policies he disagrees with.

Back in January last year, the “Last Breath” actor called out the President’s proposed tax policies that favored high-income earners at the time, even though he’d benefit as a high-earning Hollywood actor.

In a nearly three-minute video he shared on his TikTok page, he began by noting he isn’t American but lives, works, owns property, and pays taxes here. After reviewing the plan, he realized he’d likely get a tax cut, per The Hollywood Reporter.

“I guess I just wanted to say that I don’t need a tax cut. I’m happy to pay taxes. I believe I should pay taxes, and I think people like me should probably pay more. I’ve been very fortunate and very privileged, and I’m happy to pay my fair share,” he said.

Liu called Trump’s plan “really sh-tty,” pointing to financial reports indicating that the proposed changes could raise effective tax rates and living costs for a majority of working- and middle-class Americans, while delivering significant savings to top earners.

“I’m just so confused because you have so much of the American population who voted for a president that so clearly does not act in their best interest,” Liu continued. “And instead of attacking the root causes of whatever is contributing to this massive wealth disparity, they are instead distracting the public with issues and really scapegoating women and people of color and queer people and trans people.”

Earlier this year, he was also among a slew of A-list stars who spoke out against the shooting and killing of a 37-year-old woman named Renee Good by ICE officers in Minneapolis.

The “Barbie” actor wrote that he was “beyond appalled at the murderous actions of ICE agents in [Minneapolis].” He urged his followers to stand tall and not be swayed by “rhetoric,” before adding that “there is a video, and it clearly shows the murder of an unarmed woman driving away. AWAY. Immigration laws can be enforced in a dignified way. f-ck ICE forever.”
