Meet The Visually Impaired Elderly Man Who Has Been Selling Coconuts In Akuapem Akropong For Over 20 Years Despite His Condition

In Akuapem Akropong, in Ghana’s Eastern Region, an elderly visually impaired man has spent more than two decades doing what many would consider impossible, that is, running a coconut business entirely by feel.
Standing by the roadside with a cutlass in hand, he works through each coconut with practiced precision, splitting husks and shells with movements that have clearly been repeated thousands of times over the years.
He doesn’t just sell the fruit, he said he still climbs coconut trees himself to harvest it, relying on touch, memory, and years of muscle memory to navigate what sighted vendors take for granted.
Speaking about his journey, the man explained that he has been in the trade for over 20 years, building a livelihood most people assumed would be out of reach for someone with his condition.
Customers who stop by his stall often watch in quiet amazement as he handles the blade with confidence, never once needing sight to guide his hands.
