The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the commencement of academic activities by the Faculty of Law at the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, alongside 30 new academic programmes for the 2026/2027 session.
The approval gives the university access to new areas of study covering emerging technology, law, education, health sciences, environmental studies, finance and other disciplines.
The commission conveyed the decision in a letter dated September 11, 2026, with reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15. The letter was signed by the NUC Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, and addressed to FUD Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammed Gumel.
A statement signed by the university’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahaya Bello, said the approval covers full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Among the newly approved undergraduate courses are B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems and LL.B. Common and Islamic Law.
The technology-related additions place areas such as artificial intelligence, data science and information systems within the university’s academic offering at a time when digital skills are increasingly tied to employment, research and innovation.
The commission also approved B.Sc. Education Physics, B.Sc. Education Biology, B.Sc. Education Mathematics, B.Ed. Educational Management, B.Ed. Early Childhood Education and B.Ed. Adult Education.
Health-related programmes form another major part of the expansion. They include B.Sc. Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, B.Sc. Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Doctor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Radiography and Optometry.
Other approved programmes are B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology, B.Sc. Environmental Standards, B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, B.Sc. Applied Geology and Remote Sensing, B.A. Education Arabic, B.A. Education English and B.Sc. Science Laboratory Technology, with options in Biology Technology and Biochemistry Technology.

The postgraduate expansion covers PGD, M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance and Information Technology. The commission also approved master’s programmes in Banking and Finance as well as Accounting and Finance.
The Law Faculty approval is particularly significant because it clears the university to begin academic activities in the discipline, with the approved LL.B. programme combining Common and Islamic Law.
Reacting to the development, Gumel described the NUC approval as a significant milestone in FUD’s academic expansion.
He said the new programmes were selected to respond to emerging educational needs, particularly in technology, science education and health-related fields.
According to him, the expansion would equip students with relevant knowledge and skills for current industry requirements while preparing them to tackle emerging challenges in society.
Gumel added that the university’s expanded academic portfolio would strengthen the capacity of its graduates to participate effectively in the workforce and contribute to their professions and communities.
The development also comes against the backdrop of the NUC’s continuing accreditation and quality-assurance role across Nigerian universities. The commission states that it is empowered to establish minimum academic standards and accredit degree programmes offered by universities in the country.
With the 2026/2027 academic session approaching, the approval positions Federal University Dutse to offer prospective students a significantly more diverse selection of programmes, particularly in fields linked to technology, healthcare, professional training and specialised postgraduate education.
