NURTW Honours Lawal, Endorses Zamfara Governor for Second Term
The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has honoured Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, with an Award of Excellence and endorsed him for a second term in office ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The union presented the award to the governor on Wednesday at the Dome Pavilion, Government House, Gusau, in recognition of what it described as his leadership and contributions to the development of the state’s transport sector and infrastructure.
NURTW Board Chairman, Dr Najeem Usman Yasin, led a high-powered delegation to the ceremony, including the union’s National President, Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, and other senior national officials.
Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal said the endorsement reflected the positive relationship between his administration and the transport sector.
Lawal welcomed the NURTW delegation, describing Yasin’s return to Zamfara as symbolic, noting that he was the first chairman of the union in the state after its creation in 1996.
“I warmly welcome elder statesman Alhaji (Dr.) Najeem Usman Yasin (Makaman Gusau), Chairman of the Board of Trustees. As the first Zamfara State NURTW Chairman after 1996, your return is symbolic. You founded transport unionism in Zamfara, and we are proud of your legacy,” the governor said.
He also commended MC Oluomo and the union’s national leadership for what he described as efforts to reform and professionalise the transport industry across Nigeria.
Lawal said he was humbled by both the award and the endorsement, describing the latter as an indication that his administration’s policies were having an impact on ordinary citizens.
“When we took leadership, we promised Zamfara State a rebirth. We knew an efficient, safe transport sector was essential for a thriving economy,” he said.
The governor highlighted the distribution of 50 subsidised mass-transit vehicles to NURTW members as part of his administration’s efforts to improve the livelihoods of transport operators and ease public transportation.
He also cited the renovation of the Zamfara State Council Secretariat as another intervention aimed at providing transport workers with a more dignified working environment.
Earlier, Yasin said the NURTW leadership had closely monitored the governor’s achievements since he assumed office and decided to honour him as a way of publicly recognising his performance.
“We are in Gusau today to appreciate your efforts by presenting you with an Award of Excellence. We feel it is our duty as leaders of the union to find time to come and show the whole world what you have done,” Yasin said.
He described Governor Lawal as “a gift to Zamfara State,” adding that the governor had transformed the state within three years of assuming office.
Yasin further announced the union’s endorsement of Lawal for re-election in 2027 and called on NURTW members across the state to support his bid for a second term.
“I want to, on behalf of the NURTW, endorse Governor Dauda Lawal for re-election and also call on all members of the union to support and work towards his re-election in 2027 for the continuation of the good works he has started,” he said.
The NURTW leadership’s endorsement adds to the growing political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Zamfara State.
