Obuasi: Mad Rush For Gold As Residents Dig Through Rubble Of Demolished Obuasi Town Hall

Residents of Obuasi have descended in large numbers on the site of the town’s century-old Town Hall building, scrambling through debris in a desperate search for gold-bearing stones after the historic structure was brought down by fire.

The Town Hall, reportedly over 100 years old, was recently destroyed in a blaze that left much of the building reduced to rubble.

Instead of mourning the loss of the historic landmark, many residents saw an opportunity in its ruins, given Obuasi’s long-standing identity as one of Ghana’s most prominent gold-mining towns.

Footage from the scene shows a large crowd gathered under the cover of darkness, sifting through chunks of debris and stone by hand and torchlight, hoping to strike gold-laced material believed to be embedded within the building’s remains.

The chaotic scramble drew people from across the community, all eager not to miss out on whatever value might be hidden beneath the wreckage.

The scene mirrors just how deeply gold mining runs through daily life in Obuasi, where even a fallen public building can quickly become a site of informal prospecting once word spreads of potential gold content nearby.

We’ve not confirmed yet if any significant gold-bearing material has actually been recovered from the site, or whether authorities plan to intervene to regulate access to the debris.
