US President Donald Trump has responded to a pardon request from the lawyer of Lindsay Clancy, stating that her murder trial is a state matter rather than a federal one.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, President Trump described the case as a very sad situation with no winner. He noted that because the charges were brought under state law in Massachusetts, the case falls outside his presidential pardon powers. Trump added that he hopes the parties involved can reach a resolution on their own.
The response follows a public request from defence attorney Kevin Reddington during an appearance on Good Morning America. Reddington urged the president to consider mercy for Clancy, who is accused of killing her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. The defence maintains she is not criminally responsible due to suffering from postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors argue the acts were premeditated.
The case recently ended in a mistrial after the jury deadlocked. Massachusetts prosecutors have not yet announced whether they intend to retry the case.
