Pastor Alexander Idachama has become the first patient to undergo robotic-assisted surgery at Redeemer’s Health Village Hospital in Redemption City, Ogun State.
Idachama underwent a radical prostatectomy, a procedure involving the removal of the prostate gland and surrounding tissue, with the assistance of a surgical robotic system.
The operation was performed recently at the hospital in partnership with US-based RoboMed Global Inc. Prof. Obi Ekwenna-Davis, co-founder of RoboMed Global, and local doctors, including Dr Ifeanyi, were part of the surgical team.
Idachama later shared his experience in a social media post published on September 22, saying he learnt about the hospital through its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Adedamola Dada.
He said he arrived at the facility in the last week of August and underwent orientation sessions before meeting members of the surgical team, who explained the procedure and what to expect during his recovery.

According to Idachama, the robotic system used for his operation was “world-class”, while choosing the Ogun facility saved him the cost of travelling abroad for treatment.
He said he was discharged less than 24 hours after the surgery and experienced only mild pain, which subsided quickly.
Idachama described robotic-assisted surgery as offering greater precision and reduced pain, based on his experience, and said he would recommend the hospital to friends and family.
The development comes alongside another reported milestone involving Redeemer’s Health Village and RoboMed Global.
The two organisations reportedly carried out a 500-kilometre telerobotic surgery, during which surgeons at the Ogun State facility remotely operated on a patient with a kidney tumour in Abuja.
The procedure was described as West Africa’s first 500km telerobotic surgery.
Robotic-assisted surgery uses specialised robotic equipment controlled by surgeons to perform procedures through small incisions. In prostate surgery, radical prostatectomy is primarily used in the treatment of localised prostate cancer.
Redeemer’s Health Village has continued to expand its use of robotic technology, with surgeons saying the approach can reduce tissue damage, postoperative pain and hospital stays in suitable procedures.
Idachama holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering and researches electronics, electrical communication and smart grid applications. He also serves as a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, which owns and operates Redeemer’s Health Village.
