Rufai Oseni Questions Anambra Debt Figures, Points To Funds Peter Obi Reportedly Left Behind

- Arise News journalist Rufai Oseni has weighed in on the ongoing dispute between former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and the state government over loans allegedly contracted during Obi’s administration.
- Oseni argued that even if Obi had collected the loans claimed by the government, the foreign-currency funds he reportedly left behind would, in his view, have been sufficient to offset the debt.
Arise News journalist Rufai Oseni has weighed in on the ongoing controversy over loans linked to former Anambra State governor Peter Obi’s administration.
Speaking on the issue on Friday morning, Oseni said that even if the loan claims by the Anambra State Government were accepted, the foreign-currency funds Obi reportedly left behind could have covered the debt.
“Let’s assume Peter Obi actually collected the loan, as the Anambra State Government claims. If you remove the amount he left in the state’s account before leaving office, the foreign currency alone would be enough to clear the entire debt Governor Soludo claims he owes, unless there is another debt they are yet to show Nigerians.” Rufai said
The comment comes amid a renewed dispute over Anambra’s financial position when Obi left office in 2014.
The state government has said Obi’s administration contracted eight external loans between 2007 and 2013, with a combined value of $123.77 million. According to the government, $92.35 million remained outstanding as of June 30, 2026, translating to about ₦127.37 billion.
Obi’s camp has pushed back against the claims, with a 2014 handover report attributed to the former governor showing ₦91.67 billion in listed balances and investments, including a foreign-currency investment valued at US$156 million. After estimated liabilities were deducted, the report recorded a net balance of ₦86.67 billion.
The figures have since become a major point of disagreement, with the two sides presenting different interpretations of the state’s financial records and outstanding obligations.
