Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Cristian Romero will become the national team’s captain when Lionel Messi plays his final match.
Scaloni made the announcement ahead of Argentina’s upcoming friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin.
The decision marks the close of an era with the 28-year-old Romero taking over the armband.
Scaloni explained that Romero was already third in the captain hierarchy behind Messi and Nicolas Otamendi.
While goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, midfielder Rodrigo De Paul and striker Lautaro Martinez could also wear the captain’s band, Scaloni said Romero is the right choice for the role.
