Shehu Buba takes action over terrorism, banditry claims

Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has submitted himself to Nigeria’s security agencies for investigation following allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

Buba, who has strongly denied the allegations, said he was ready to be investigated by the relevant authorities and challenged security agencies to establish the truth behind the claims.

The senator’s decision was reported by several major Nigerian newspapers, including Premium Times, Punch, Vanguard and The Guardian, following renewed allegations against him.

According to the reports, Buba voluntarily made himself available to the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and the Defence Intelligence Agency for investigation.

He said the move was necessary to clear his name and put an end to what he described as unsubstantiated allegations circulating in the public space.

Buba maintained that he had never sponsored terrorism, banditry or kidnapping and had no links to criminal organisations.

The senator also rejected claims contained in a viral video that allegedly connected him to bandit groups. Premium Times had earlier reported that Buba described the video as manipulated and intended to damage his reputation.

Buba challenges security agencies

Speaking on the allegations, Buba said he had nothing to hide and was prepared to face the consequences if investigators found credible evidence against him.

He reportedly urged the security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and determine whether there was any basis for the accusations.

The senator said allegations of such magnitude should not be settled through social media claims, edited videos or political attacks, but through proper investigation and evidence.

His decision to submit himself for investigation has now shifted the matter from social media controversy to a formal call for scrutiny by Nigeria’s security agencies.

Punch reported that Buba voluntarily presented himself for a probe over the allegations, while Vanguard similarly reported that he had submitted himself to the relevant security agencies.

Senator denies allegations

Buba has consistently denied any involvement in terrorism, banditry financing or kidnapping.

He has also maintained that the accusations are an attempt to damage his reputation.

The renewed controversy comes against the backdrop of his previous involvement in national security matters as a senator. His position has placed him in contact with security and intelligence institutions, but Buba insists such interactions should not be interpreted as evidence of links to criminal groups.

He said anyone with concrete evidence against him should present it to the appropriate authorities instead of relying on unverified claims.

The senator further indicated that he was willing to face prosecution if investigators established a case against him.

The Guardian reported that Buba declared his readiness for prosecution should the allegations be substantiated by credible evidence.

Calls for evidence

The controversy has generated renewed attention around allegations of political figures having links to criminal networks in parts of northern Nigeria, where banditry and kidnapping remain major security concerns.

However, there is currently no indication from the reports reviewed that the allegations against Buba have been established as fact.

Rather, the senator remains the subject of allegations that he has denied while asking security agencies to investigate.

Buba’s decision to submit himself for investigation could therefore provide an opportunity for the relevant authorities to examine the claims and determine whether there is any evidence to support them.

For now, the senator insists that the allegations are false and has challenged investigators to establish the truth.

The matter is expected to remain under public scrutiny as Nigerians await any official findings from the security agencies involved.
