Tension At Plateau Specialist Hospital As Employee’s Arrest Disrupts Services

Activities at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos were briefly disrupted on Tuesday after security operatives reportedly arrested a member of staff following a disagreement involving a patient and the enforcement of the hospital’s visiting hours.

The incident, which occurred at about 11am, reportedly created tension within the facility and led some workers to temporarily withdraw from their duty posts, disrupting services for more than two hours.

Although normal activities have since resumed, the development has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the impact of disputes involving patients, visitors and hospital personnel on the smooth delivery of healthcare services.

A source within the hospital told LEADERSHIP that the worker was on duty when he was allegedly taken away by security operatives following a complaint lodged by a patient.

According to the source, the disagreement stemmed from the staff member’s attempt to enforce the hospital management’s directive on approved visiting hours.

The staff member was said to have prevented a visitor from seeing a patient outside the designated visiting period, in accordance with the facility’s rules.

However, the action reportedly did not go down well with the patient, who was said to have contacted security operatives, leading to the staff member’s arrest.

The development subsequently generated tension among workers and patients, with some members of staff reportedly temporarily leaving their duty posts.

Sources said the disruption lasted for more than two hours before normal activities gradually resumed.

Hospitals often regulate visiting hours to enable medical personnel to attend to patients without unnecessary interruptions and to maintain order within wards. Such restrictions can also help healthcare facilities manage overcrowding and reduce disturbances, particularly in busy specialist hospitals where patients require varying levels of care.

However, disputes over the enforcement of such regulations can sometimes create tension among hospital workers, patients, and their relatives, particularly where there is disagreement over patient access.

The source said the management of Plateau Specialist Hospital had begun efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s incident and ensure that the matter was resolved.

“The management is working to get to the root of the matter and ensure that the situation is resolved,” the source said.

As of the time of filing this report, the hospital management had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Efforts by LEADERSHIP to obtain comments from the hospital management and the relevant security agencies were unsuccessful as of press time.
