“We Are Not Aware Of His Coming” – Benue Govt Reacts After Peter Obi’s Convoy Was Blocked

- Peter Obi’s planned visit to Yelewata, Benue State, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, was disrupted after his convoy was reportedly blocked by youths along Gboko Road.
- The Benue State Government has denied prior knowledge of the trip and rejected claims that the youths were acting on its behalf.
- Obi’s team, however, maintains that security agencies were duly informed, while the police confirmed awareness of the movement and said investigations were ongoing into why the convoy was stopped.
The Benue State Government has denied knowledge of Peter Obi’s visit to the state after the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, reportedly had his convoy blocked by youths on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Obi was reportedly heading to Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area to meet families affected by the deadly June 2025 attack when his convoy was stopped by some youths at Gyado Villa along Gboko Road, Makurdi.
Reacting to the incident, Kula Tersoo, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, said the state government had not been informed about Obi’s arrival.
“We are not aware of his coming to the state, and if it were to be security agents that stopped him, it would have been easy for us to find out what happened,” Tersoo said.
He also denied that the youths were acting on behalf of the government, saying Obi was not a threat to Governor Alia.
“Our government doesn’t patronize thugs and in any case Obi is not a threat to the governor, we are not aware that Obi is coming to Benue. Am hearing it from you,” he added.
However, NDC governorship candidate in Benue, Prof. Terhemba Shija, said Obi’s team had informed the police and DSS ahead of the visit and that both agencies provided security.
The Benue State Police Command also confirmed that it was aware of Obi’s movement and said its operatives provided security, while the reason for the blockade remained under investigation.
The development has continued to generate reactions on X, with some users questioning how Peter Obi’s convoy could have been blocked if authorities were completely unaware of his visit.
