The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied allegations that funds collected from aspirants and supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections were diverted, insisting that the money was properly received and managed by the party.
The opposition party addressed the allegations in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, who described reports surrounding the NDC’s fundraising and candidate selection process as misinformation and propaganda driven by disgruntled elements.
According to the party, raising money from aspirants, stakeholders and supporters became necessary as it works to build its political structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
NDC explains why it sought financial support
Director explained that the NDC currently lacks elected public officeholders whose political structures could help support its operations.
He said, “As a new party without a president, governors, ministers, or other holders of public office, the task of building and sustaining the party posed an existential challenge.”
The NDC spokesperson added, “The NDC therefore took a proactive decision to solicit financial support from aspirants, stakeholders, and members of the public to fund party operations. This is provided for in the party’s constitution.”
Addressing allegations about what happened to the money, Director said, “All such contributions, levies, and donations were paid directly into the designated party account and received and managed by the appropriate organs of the party.”

The NDC further defended the collection of donations and levies, describing fundraising from members and supporters as a normal practice among political parties.
The controversy comes as political activities intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with parties and aspiring candidates strengthening their structures and preparing for the polls.
