The eldest son of slain Kano-based social media personality, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, Ammar Ibrahim Dan Shagamu, has demanded justice for his father, saying the family will not forgive those responsible for his death.
Speaking exclusively with LEADERSHIP, Ammar described his father’s death as a heartbreaking loss, saying he and his five siblings were still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
“My five siblings and I are now left orphaned. We are still in deep sadness and grief over the death of our father,” he said.
Ammar, who said he had left home about four years ago, recalled how he was suddenly called back with the news of his father’s gruesome murder.
“After leaving home four years ago, I was suddenly called home with the news of my father’s gruesome murder.
“The details surrounding the murder are still hazy for me because I didn’t even know he had faced any threats until I came home after his death,” he said.
According to him, Dan Shagamu had recently moved from their original area to Gaida, where he stayed with a friend.
“He had left our original area and recently moved to Gaida, where he stayed with a friend, but he faced some issues with some people, based on the accounts I got from our relatives.
“They tried to stop him from giving alms and sweets to kids in the area, and it led to a misunderstanding that led to some boys making death threats towards him.
“He recorded it and sent it to some of our relatives, and the boys are now suspects in the case. They are in police custody,” Ammar said.
He said the family was still trying to piece together what happened during his father’s final moments.
“The only thing neighbours and eyewitnesses could tell me about my father’s last moments is that they last saw him enter his house after Maghrib, and two people followed him inside.
“After a while, the two people came out, but he didn’t, and that is the last time anyone saw him alive.
“But no one can tell us who the two people were, and I don’t know if they are the same men in custody or not,” he said.
Ammar said the family was relying on the police investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing.
“The police commissioner himself came to console us, and they are still conducting an investigation, so we are hopeful the truth will be revealed,” he said.
He also cautioned against drawing conclusions about a possible political motive behind the killing.
“Although he is a critic, we can’t conclusively say his murder had anything to do with politics or any group of people he might have offended,” Ammar said.
He, however, said the family wanted those responsible for the killing to be brought to justice.
