Netflix’s docuseries “Death of the Pastor’s Wife” has renewed interest in the case of Mica Miller, who was found deceased at a North Carolina state park in April 2024. Her death was ruled a suicide, but questions surrounding her final days and her troubled marriage to Pastor John Paul “JP” Miller have continued. JP is facing federal charges unrelated to Mica’s death, and many are still seeking justice for his wife.
On August 26, Netflix released the three-part docuseries “Death of the Pastor’s Wife,” which investigated the tragic death of Mica Miller in 2024. Mica was married to Pastor John Paul “JP” Miller and was a worship leader at the Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
In April 2024, 911 received a call from Mica, in which she told the dispatcher, “I’m about to kill myself, and I just want my family to know where to find me.” Deputies were sent to her location immediately, but the vast size of the state park prevented them from pinpointing her exact location.
More than an hour later, emergency services got a call from a kayaker who reported a body in the water. The deceased was identified as Mica, and it was later determined that she died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Her death came just a couple of days after JP was served divorce papers.
Her death was officially ruled a suicide, but lingering questions about what happened in the days leading up to her passing have fueled continued calls for answers.
Mica Miller Made Several Allegations Against John Paul Miller
Mica decided to divorce John Paul after realizing that her husband’s behavior wouldn’t change. In an affidavit attached to her divorce filing, Mica wrote, “Since the day we became husband and wife, I have been abused in every way I can think of – emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially, and physically.” She also found out that John Paul was having an affair with a congregant, Suzie Skinner.
Mica claimed that John Paul put her in a mental health facility against her will, demanded sex several times a day, cut off her access to finances, and used their faith to control her.
The day after Mica’s death, John Paul reportedly preached as usual during Sunday service, only telling the congregation that Mica died by suicide at the end.
John Paul Miller Is Still A Pastor
Solid Rock Church closed its doors in November 2024, and John Paul Miller started the Mercy Church that same year. In 2025, John Paul married Suzie Skinner, the same woman he had an affair with. According to reports, the pastor continues to preach to a small group of parishioners while Skinner serves as the worship leader, per Oxygen.
Mica’s death investigation was closed in 2024. Her family believes John Paul is responsible for Mica’s death due to the extreme psychological and emotional abuse they claim she went through. They say that she may have taken her own life, but they allege John Paul drove her over the edge.
John Paul Miller Is Facing Federal Charges
In December 2025, John Paul was indicted for cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.
The pastor allegedly harassed Mica from 2022 until her death and sent her unwanted messages, contacted her multiple times a day, and even posted a nude photo of her wife online. He also reportedly placed a tracker on Mica’s car and meddled with her finances.
Federal investigators also allege that John Paul made false statements during an October 2024 interview, despite having evidence to the contrary.
The pastor pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in January. His trial has been delayed several times, and he is next due in court on October 6, per Fox8 News.
Protesters Confront The Pastor Outside His Church
In late 2024, John Paul was arrested for assault and battery after he allegedly confronted a group of women who were protesting outside his church. As noted in the warrant, the pastor hit a woman’s hat and walked away. He spent several hours in jail and was released on a $776 bond.
Following Netflix’s docuseries, several people are once again calling for justice. As reported by ABC 15 News, a group of people holding signs that read “Justice for Mica” protested outside the Mercy Church in late August.
“We just want the truth. We want justice for her. We want there to be accountability,” said one protester.
